Remembering Li Po on a Spring Day
Li Po his poetry is unrivalled yet
Whose flights of fancy soar above the crowd:
As pure and fresh a note as Yu Hsin struck,
Transcendent as a Bao endowed.①
A tree in Spring upon the Wei’s north bank,
And east of the Jiang a sunset cloud.②
When shall we two over a bottle of wine
Again descant on letters, do us proud?
①Yu Hsin and Bao Jiao were poets of the
early Tang Dynasty whom Tu Fu admired.
②Jiangtung, where Li Po was now.
